Under a federal law entitled the Solomon Amendment, military recruiters are allowed to access some address, biographical, and academic information on students age 17 and older. The Department of Education has determined the Solomon Amendment supersedes most elements of FERPA. An institution is therefore obligated to release data included in the list of "Student Recruiting Information," which may or may not match IECC's FERPA directory information. HOWEVER, if a student has a current Directory Information Restriction Notification (see FERPA) on file, IECC will not provide data on the student and, under the law, is released of any obligation to do so.
Student Recruiting Information as defined by the Solomon Amendment includes:
- Telephone Number
- Age/Date of Birth
- Place of Birth (N/A to IECC - this information is not collected from students)
- Class Level (freshman, sophomore, continuing)
- Major field of study
- Degrees received
- Most recent educational institution attended
