Clarity Assignment

Clarity Assignment

Clarity gives students a writing space where drafting and revision are visible to you. Use it when the writing process matters as much as the final product.

When Clarity is preferable to a Standard Assignment

  • You want to see how a paper developed, not only the finished version.
  • You want to support students while they draft.
  • Process evidence, such as drafts and revision, is part of how you assess learning.

What students experience

Students write inside the Clarity writing space linked from Canvas instead of uploading a finished file. Explain to students what is recorded and how you will use it before the first assignment.

Set up in Canvas

Create a Clarity assignment from your Canvas course following the Turnitin Clarity instructions, then test it as a student if possible. Questions about setup: request a CETL consultation after you complete the training.

Interpreting the Clarity Writing Report

The report shows information about the writing process. Treat it as one piece of evidence. Compare it with the assignment directions, other work from the student, and a conversation with the student before drawing conclusions.

Assignment design, accessibility, and contingency planning

  • Give clear directions and state permitted and prohibited AI use.
  • Offer an alternative way to complete the work for students who cannot use the writing space or need accommodations.
  • Plan what students should do if the technology fails, such as contacting you and the IECC Help Desk.

Training and official resources

Use the Clarity overview video, the guide to creating a Clarity assignment, and the introduction to Clarity from Turnitin. These links will be added to the training page.

Turnitin reports provide evidence for faculty review; they do not independently determine plagiarism, AI misuse, or academic misconduct.
