Review and Respond

Review and Respond

Turnitin reports provide evidence for faculty review. They do not independently determine plagiarism, AI misuse, or academic misconduct. Use the same careful process for every concern.

A common review process

  1. Examine the student submission and the assignment expectations.
  2. Review the underlying report details, not only a percentage or indicator.
  3. Compare multiple forms of evidence, such as earlier work, drafts, and sources.
  4. Invite the student to explain the work and their writing process.
  5. Document the review and follow IECC policy.

Understanding the Similarity report

The Similarity report highlights text that matches other sources. Matches can be quotations, citations, common phrases, or reference lists. Look at what matched and why before drawing conclusions.

Understanding AI-writing information

AI-writing information is a review signal, not proof. It can be wrong. Never rely on it alone. Combine it with other evidence and a conversation with the student.

Authorship review

Authorship review is a specialized pathway. Confirm with CETL and the appropriate IECC office how it is accessed before using it.

Using the Clarity Writing Report

The Clarity Writing Report shows information about how a document was written. See the Clarity page.

Fair review and student conversation

  • Begin with curiosity: ask the student to describe how they wrote the work.
  • Be clear about what you observed and what your expectations were.
  • Keep Similarity, AI-writing, Clarity, and Authorship guidance separate.

Possible academic integrity violation? Follow the IECC academic integrity and student conduct procedures.
