Course Description:
This comprehensive course is designed for rehabilitation professionals who work with active populations, including physical therapists, athletic trainers, and occupational therapists. The content integrates return-to-sport and discharge testing across the continuum of care with evidence-based management strategies specific to the overhead athlete, from youth throwers to recreational participants such as pickleball athletes.
Participants will engage in interactive case discussions and hands-on lab sessions to develop a comprehensive, systematic approach to clinical decision-making. Emphasis will be placed on identifying and addressing barriers to testing, applying validated discharge tools, understanding biological healing timeframes, and recognizing the psychological factors influencing readiness for return to sport. Clinicians will gain knowledge of common shoulder and elbow pathologies, practice best-practice special test clusters to enhance diagnostic accuracy, and implement effective evaluative and intervention techniques to address impairments and restore functional performance.
The course also highlights the unique risk factors and compensatory movement patterns seen across the lifespan in overhead athletes, while underscoring the importance of safe return-to-throwing and pitching guidelines, including evidence-based pitch count recommendations by age and workload, to reduce risk of injury.
Learning Objectives:
Identify evidence-based return-to-sport and discharge testing criteria, along with strategies to overcome barriers to testing.
Explain biological tissue healing and functional recovery timeframes and integrate them into clinical decision-making.
Synthesize results of discharge and performance testing to formulate safe, individualized return-to-sport recommendations.
Demonstrate knowledge of common shoulder and elbow pathologies in overhead athletes across the lifespan and apply best-practice special test clusters to assist diagnosis.
Identify risk factors, including range of motion limitations and compensatory patterns, that increase injury risk in overhead athletes.
Apply impairment-based corrective strategies and appropriately modify interventions to enhance movement quality, motor learning, and overall performance.
Educate athletes and caregivers on return-to-sport and return-to-throwing guidelines, including evidence-based pitch count recommendations by age and workload.
Appreciate the role of regional interdependence and the psychological component in influencing recovery and return-to-sport readiness.
Develop effective communication strategies to discuss testing importance, results, and clinical recommendations with athletes and caregivers.
