More than 400 students from area high schools filled Wabash Valley College’s Brubeck Arts Center Theatre for the 7th annual health care career expo and cadaver surgery on Feb. 21.
The annual event, which is hosted in conjunction with Wabash General Hospital, allowed students to hear from industry professionals about their specific roles in the medical field, tour Wabash Valley College’s life sciences and nursing facilities and watch a total knee replacement surgery performed on one of the college’s cadavers.
Dr. Todd Gill, life science professor at WVC, introduced the medical staff who would perform the operation for the students. Dr. Gill also thanked all those who helped make the event possible, especially Wabash General Hospital. Dr. Julko Fullop, Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon at WGH, oversaw the operation while commentating about the procedure and taking questions from the audience.
After the surgery was complete, students had the opportunity to go onstage to get an up-close look at the cadavers and speak with the medical professionals who performed the surgery.
