Students in Lincoln Trail College’s Sport Management program got the opportunity to learn about careers in Major League Baseball at an event with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The students traveled to St. Louis on May 2 to attend a game between the Cardinals and Chicago White Sox, but that was only one part of the trip. The students also got to visit with four Cardinals employees and one White Sox employee during a panel discussion.

“We wanted to give the students a chance to learn about careers,” says LTC Sport Management Lead Instructor Tyler Browning. “The panel discussion gave the students the chance to learn the importance of networking and internships and they got to see what kinds of careers they could have when they enter the job market.”

The students met with Cardinals Program Coordinator of Community Relations Tim Woodvine, Community Relationals Coordinator Lindsey Weber, Group Sales Account Executive Stephanie Durocher, and Direct Sales Representative Michael Mardis. White Sox New Business Executive Thomas Siwek also joined the panel.

The five panelists talked about their positions and how they got their jobs. They also offered the students advice for what they need to do to work in professional sports.

The event served as the third experiential trip for the program in the 2017-18 academic year. In November, students visited DePauw University to hear from ESPN founder Bill Rasmussen. In March, the students traveled to the University of Illinois and the United Center to learn about facility management and game day operations. The students also heard about coaching from Eastern Illinois University men’s basketball coach Jay Spoonhour in April when he visited the class.

“It’s really important to provide our students with experiences like this,” says Browning. “We want them to learn from people that have experience in the industry. We want them to be able to see what goes into those jobs. This also gives the students the chance to see what kind of potential careers there are in the sport industry.”
