Lincoln Trail College has named Taylor Dahlberg its new Theater Director. In this role, Dahlberg will be responsible for directing LTC productions, facilitating Summer Children’s Theatre, managing the Zwermann Performing Arts Center, and occasionally teaching theater classes.
Dahlberg, who grew up in Iowa, had a winding road to theater. As a child, she wanted to be a veterinarian and as she got older, she wanted to be an English teacher. She started college as an English major. “A friend talked me into taking a theater class which led me to getting involved in the productions, and then I became a theater major.”
She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Central College in Pella, Iowa, and then completed a Master of Fine Arts in Directing at Western Illinois University. “As an undergraduate student I had a mentor who taught me so much about theatre and life, and it is primarily because of her that I decided I wanted to go into theatre education. One of my passions is teaching, and I love getting to mentor students who are on their own journeys, which is why I decided to pursue my MFA.”
In addition to directing, Dahlberg also does stage management, design, stage combat, some choreography, and playwriting. “I love working in the arts because I get paid to be passionate and creative. I absolutely love that I rarely know what each day is going to look like. It is all about problem solving and finding creative solutions, often under pressure, and I find that really fun.”
Outside of work, she enjoys attending other theatrical productions. In college, she studied abroad in London, England where she visited one of her favorite theaters, the National Theatre. In the three months she was there, she saw 35 different theatrical productions. She also enjoys crafting, spending time with her cat Smidge, and reading.
She says her family has been amazingly supportive of her career. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without all of their love and support. “My aunt and grandma, especially, are two of my biggest fans, and one of my favorite things to do is call and regale them with news of my adventures.”
