The Arts at Lincoln Trail College will present an evening of guitar and flute music featuring Michael Patilla and Sophie Kershaw-Patilla. The concert takes place on September 23 at 7:00 p.m. at the Zwermann Arts Center Theater.
The concert features music by William Beauvais, Mauro Giuliani, Nikita Koshkin, Manuel Ponce, Andrew York, and others.
It is the first of three concerts the duo is performing. They are playing at Michael Patilla’s alma mater, The University of Montevallo, on October 6. The final concert is for the Rochester Music Guild in Rochester, Minn. on May 19, 2023.
Michael Patilla is a 1993 graduate of the University of Montevallo. After graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree from Montevallo, he received a Master of Music degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He has been active as a classical guitarist for over 35 years, performing throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. As a Fulbright Scholar, he served as a guest lecturer at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras, performed concerts throughout the country, made various radio and television appearances, and collaborated with Honduran composers to publish a collection of works for guitar. He created the guitar program at Mississippi State University, where he was on the faculty for 18 years, and currently serves as Director of The Arts at Lincoln Trail College.
Sophie Kershaw-Patilla holds a Bachelor of Instrumental Music Education degree from Mississippi State University and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Psychology from Tennessee Technological University. She has been active as a flutist and piccoloist with over 25 years of experience as a regional performer and private instructor. She is a former member and board member of the Tennessee Wind Symphony in Knoxville, Tennessee. During her tenure, the TWS was the recipient of the John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Silver Scroll, North America’s most prestigious award for community concert bands. A member of Kappa Delta Pi, an International Honor Society in Education, she enjoys teaching applied music lessons, directing and performing with various ensembles, and teaching psychology courses at Lincoln Trail College.
Admission for the September 23 concert at Lincoln Trail College is $5 at the door.
