The Olney Central College Jazz Ensemble and the combined Concert and Community Band will present their Spring Concert at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 6 in the Dr. John D. Stull Performing Arts Center.
“We are thrilled to be performing live and in-person again for the first time since the pandemic began,” said OCC Director of Bands Wade Baker. “The students are all incredibly excited to get to perform for the community and the band is sounding really good.”
The evening will feature works by all American composers including David Holsinger, Frank Ticheli and John Williams. Baker invited alumni from his tenure at OCC to join the Concert/Community Band performance.
“We’re hoping to make this an alumni event in the future,” he added. “I encourage alumni prior to my time at OCC to contact me so we can keep in touch and invite them to participate.”
The Jazz Ensemble will present Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis’ tunes along with an original composition by the students.
“As part of the class this semester, we are focusing on understanding the importance of the blues,” Baker said. “We played other blues pieces and decided to write our own.”
The concert is open to the public with donations accepted at the door.
As the semester winds down, the Music Department is already looking ahead to next fall.
“Anyone who is interested in joining in the Jazz Ensemble or Concert Band can contact me,” Baker said. “We still have tuition waivers available, which are open to all students not just music majors.”
