OCC Rock and Jazz Concert April 19

Apr 18, 2023

The Olney Central College Music Department will present its Rock and Jazz Concert at 7 p.m. on April 19 in the Dr. John D. Stull Performing Arts Center.

This evening of music will feature performances by the two Contemporary Ensembles (Rock Bands) and the OCC Jazz Ensemble.

The Contemporary Bands will perform popular commercial music spanning from the late 1980s through the 2000s. The first set will include All Around Me by Flyleaf, Jimmy Eat World’s The Middle, Type O Negative’s Christian Woman, Thank You for the Venom by My Chemical Romance and Twisted Reality, an original composition by OCC student Maggie Payne.

The second band will perform Bowling for Soup’s 1985, Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind, Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer and Slide by the Goo Goo Dolls.

The OCC Jazz Ensemble’s selections will include the Brazilian brass sounds of Blue Bossa along with the standard swing song Summertime and Crazy Race, a contemporary piece with elements of hip hop, soul and jazz fusion.

The concert is open to the public with donations accepted at the door.

OCC Director of Bands Wade Baker is excited to showcase the students’ work over the spring semester and is looking forward to next fall.

“Our numbers are coming back up again,” Baker said. “We have 19 prospective students for next year and we are looking to grow the program further.”

Over the next four years, Baker said the Music Department will receive $32,000 from the OCC Foundation for new equipment. The program recently used a portion of the funds to purchase percussion instruments.

“We are trying to accrue the basic needs of a Music Department and trying to open different avenues for students to serve their needs and wants,” Baker added. “We are very excited and doing everything we can for students whether they want a two-year degree or are preparing for a four-year degree.”

Those efforts include ongoing updates to the college’s recording facilities.

“We have our first client for our recording studio, which has been a big project,” Baker said. “We will be sharing more information and opening those services to the community in the coming months.”

Baker invites students to apply for the Music Department’s Tuition Waivers. The scholarships are available to qualifying students who participate in one or more of the OCC bands and choirs. Students need not be music majors to qualify.
