Overview

Delivering quality healthcare depends on accurate, timely medical information. Medical coding professionals play an important role in the healthcare workplace. Coders are responsible for translating healthcare providers’ diagnostic and procedural phrases into coded form. Demand in the coding field is high.

The Medical Coding Associate Certificate at Olney Central College prepares students for a career in the growing field of health information coding. Students learn to review and analyze medical records, identify diagnoses and procedures, and assign the appropriate codes using classification systems and coding software. 

Accurate coding helps healthcare providers access medical information for patient care, research and education. It also plays an important role in healthcare reimbursement for patients covered by Medicare, Medicaid and other insurance programs. Students learn coding systems used in a variety of healthcare settings, including physician offices, ambulatory care and long-term care.

Certification Opportunity

Students who successfully complete the program may sit for the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) examination offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Program Requirements

Students must earn a grade of C or better in all courses in the Medical Coding Associate Certificate program and maintain a minimum 2.0 term GPA to continue in the program.
