The Wabash Valley Arts Council recently hosted its inaugural Theatre Camp at the Wabash Valley College Brubeck Arts Theatre, bringing together young talents from the community for a week of learning and performance. The camp, open to students entering 5th grade through high school seniors, ran daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a lunch break at noon.
Under the expert guidance of instructor Mikayla Beck, campers delved into various aspects of musical theatre. Each participant received at least one 15-minute voice lesson, with the possibility of more based on the number of campers. Daily dance instruction, basic stage direction, audition techniques, and performance preparation were key components of the curriculum.
The camp culminated in a short cabaret-style performance on the evening of July 13th at 4 p.m., showcasing the skills and confidence the campers had gained throughout the week. To participate fully, campers were required to come prepared with one musical theatre piece to sing and a list of musical theatre songs they already knew.
The event featured a talented team of clinicians: Mikayla Beck as Director, Keegan Tucker for Dance, Amanda Andrews for Voice, and Dr. Rebecca Vonkamp for Voice. With over 10 participants, the camp was deemed a success, providing a rich, immersive experience in the world of musical theatre for the young performers.
The Wabash Valley Arts Council looks forward to building on this success and continuing to nurture the artistic talents of our community's youth through future camps and events.
