Students Can Begin Medical Coding Certificate This Summer at OCC

MEDICAL CODING PHOTOMedical coders are in demand and you can prepare for this growing career at Olney Central College.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for certified medical coding professionals will increase 22 percent through 2022. Wages also are increasing. In 2017, the average salaries among healthcare professionals increased 6 percent over the previous year.

Coders are responsible for translating healthcare providers’ diagnostic and procedural phrases into coded form. Coding professionals do this by reviewing and analyzing health records to identify relevant diagnoses and procedures for distinct patient encounters.

Through the three-semester Medical Coding Associate Certificate Program, students gain the training needed to enter this specialized field. The classes also prepare individuals for the Certificate Coding Associate Exam/Certification.

Medical coding professionals work in a variety of healthcare settings, including inpatient and outpatient healthcare and for non-providers such as the insurance industry and healthcare software vendors. Medical coding also offers higher wages and more employability than other medical office positions.

Students can start classes during the summer semester, which begins June 5. For more information or to register, call 618-395-7777.
