OCC Foundation Purchases Mortuary Cooler with La Gala Funds
The Olney Central College Foundation used proceeds it received from last year’s La Gala to purchase a mortuary cooler for the Life Science Department.
Instructor Chris Mathews said the $12,824 self-contained unit replaces an older cooling system that has been in use since the 1980s. He noted temperatures inside the new cooler can be better maintained, reducing mold growth and helping to preserve the cadavers, which are used by students in OCC’s anatomy classes.
The new cooler also is smaller and has freed up storage space for both the Life Science and Nursing departments, who share the room.
“We have already noticed a big difference with the new cooler,” Mathews said. “We are very grateful and glad to have it. I appreciate OCC President Rodney Ranes’ efforts in working with the Foundation to enable us to get this new equipment.”
Ranes also thanked OCC’s Operations and Maintenance staff and Illini Builders for addressing installation issues and assisting with the project’s completion.
