LTC Theater Productions Announced

Barbara Shimer, director of theater at Lincoln Trail College, has announced the productions for the 2016-2017 season. Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods will be presented in the fall, and the classic The Music Man will be the spring musical.

Into the Woods is an epic fairytale about wishes, family and the choices we make. The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

The musical debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986 and premiered on Broadway on November 5, 1987, where it won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical. The musical has since been produced many times, with a 1988 US national tour, a 1990 West End production, a 1997 tenth anniversary concert, a 2002 Broadway revival, a 2010 London revival and in 2012 as part of New York City's outdoor Shakespeare in the Park series. It was adapted into a film version in 2014 featuring Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp. Into the Woods has been rated PG-13 for thematic elements.

The cast calls for seven men and ten women. Auditions will be at 6 pm. September 19 and 20 in the Zwermann Arts Center Theater. Audition packets will be available after Labor Day. Performances are at 7 p.m. on November 4-5, 11-12 and 2 p.m. on November 6.

The spring of 2017 will see the return of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man. The musical follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band that he vows to organize—this, despite the fact that he doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain's fall.

By turns wicked, funny, warm, romantic, and touching, The Music Man is family entertainment at its best. Meredith Willson's six-time, Tony Award-winning musical comedy has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation.

Ensemble and principle roles are available for actors of all ages. Auditions for The Music Man will be held at 6 p.m. on January 23 and 24. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on March 24-25, March 31 and April 1 and 2 p.m. on March 26 and April 2.
