LTC Offering Lifeguard Training Class
Lincoln Trail College is offering a training class for people wanting to earn lifeguard certification from the Red Cross.
The certification training requires 25 hours of instruction. Students do 9.5 hours of training in the pool, eight hours of training in CPR, and 7.5 hours of training online.
The training begins April 1 at 10 a.m. with an orientation and swim test. Students will be required to swim 300 yards continuously; tread water for two minutes using only their legs and must complete a timed event within a minute and 40 seconds. In the timed event, you must swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a ten-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, and exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Once students complete the swim test, they will be given the information for continuing and registering for the course.
The CPR and in-pool sessions of the class take place April 2-8.
Students will need to pay a $35 Red Cross Fee. LTC tuition and fees are $60 for in-district students if they are taking no other classes, $123 for in-district students currently taking other classes, and $150 for out-of-district students in surrounding counties.
A CPR face shield barrier costs $11.75 plus tax. The textbook is available for free online or can be purchased from the LTC Bookstore.
The Lifeguard Training Class is limited to 15 students.
